MEDIA STATEMENT –Acting Commissioner Fitz Bailey

February 21st, 2025.

The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force (RT&CIPF) acknowledges the media’s vital role in informing the public. However, we strongly condemn the irresponsible release of a police officer’s name and uniformed photograph, linking him to a recent shootout with armed suspects who remain at large.

This reckless act has not only compromised the officer’s safety but has also led to direct threats  against his life, including despicable calls on social media to “put a couple of shots in his head.”

Our officers face extreme risks every day to uphold the rule of law and safeguard the people of the Turks and Caicos Islands. The thoughtless exposure of their identities places them, their families, and the broader community in danger. The media must recognize the gravity of their reporting and the potential consequences of their actions.

Let me be unequivocally clear: threats against law enforcement officers will not be tolerated, and we will use all available resources to identify the perpetrator (s) and ensure they are brought to justice.

As acting Commissioner of Police, I strongly denounce any act that endangers the lives of the men and women who put themselves in harm’s way to protect the TCI. This matter has been referred for investigation, and we will use all internal resources to ensure that those responsible are identified and that appropriate action is taken against them.

The media is often referred to as the Fourth Estate, playing a critical role in our society. While we embrace the power associated with free speech, such power comes with responsibility. We urge all media houses to uphold ethical journalism standards and ensure that their reporting does not jeopardize the lives of those who serve and protect.

The safety of our officers and that of the TCI is non-negotiable.

The security of the TCI must never be compromised for the sake of sensationalism, clicks, or social media engagement.
