Exercise Caution When Driving
The Royal Turks and Caicos Islands Police Force is asking members of the public to be extra alert and cautious when offering rides to unknown persons.
This warning follows separate reports made by two male victims yesterday (August 05th) night in Providenciales.
Shortly after 6 p.m., the Police Control Room received a report that a black Honda Fit had been stolen. Based on preliminary reports, the driver was proceeding along Long Bay Road and stopped to offer three males a lift. The males begged the driver to buy something to eat because they were hungry.
The driver stopped at a bank, parked the vehicle and told the males to wait. Upon his return, the car was missing.
Around 8:05 pm, Chalk Sound officers received a report of another robbery.
The victim indicated while driving a Honda Fit in Five Cays, he stopped and offered a male a ride to his destination. The male entered his car, pulled a gun, and robbed him.
Acting Superintendent (Serious Crime) Kenville Charles said, “The RT&CIPF is warning drivers against giving rides to hitchhikers; we ask that you exercise caution and prioritise your safety. “While being a good Samaritan is important, not everyone is genuine. Some individuals are keen to exploit your good nature.”
The RTCIPF is asking anyone with information regarding these incidents or other information that may assist the police with enquiries to contact 911, the closest police station, the Serious. Crime Unit at 231-1842, or call Crime Stoppers at 1-800-8477 and anonymously give any information. Additionally, you can download the CrimeStoppers P3 app and share information.
